In 1942 Dr. Enrique Diaz Montes came to Mexicali, pursuing the idea of establishing a new Clinic specially dedicated to the treatment of arthritis. Arthritis diseases, chiefly Rheumatoid arthritis and Rheumatic fever, were rampant in the population at that time.

Dr. Diaz Montes dedicated himself to the treatment of Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis. Hundreds of patients were seen by him with great success, but the level of improvement was always limited by the extent of destruction of the joints. There was a limit to what the medical treatment of the day could offer. It was not until the beginning of the 1970s that Dr. Diaz Montes and his young nephew Dr. Luis Carrillo started to perform surgery on joints with severe bone destruction. It was the dawn of the new era, one could say, as it was said of the discovery of antibiotics or the presence of microorganisms by Pasteur in the 19th century. Finally, they could offer hip and knee implants to patients who had spent years confined to a wheelchair.

In 1974 when the youngest nephew Dr. Fernando Carrillo arrived at the clinic, the development of this type of reconstructive surgery was broadened to include other implants such as hands, ankles and elbows. The Carrillos consider that this has been a great advance in the development of rehabilitation, giving those patients that were partially or totally incapacitated a new and active life.

[Just before Dr. Montes retired][better here to use the dates, eg In the late 1980s], the clinic was inundated with many patients suffering from asthma, emphysema and COPD. After treating thousands of patients with these diseases, this clinic has a lot of experience in the treatment of certain pulmonary diseases. We have helped some patients [to achieve a decent][or, to extend their] life expectancy, while others have been able to return to their normal lives or to their usual work, which previously was very much limited because of the lack of air.

As you can see, we feel very proud of the work initiated by Dr. Montes.  We believe that, because of his work and our constant effort in searching for something new to offer our patients, we have contributed to the rehabilitation of many people suffering from these types of diseases. This is our great satisfaction and we will continue serving the clientele as much as possible.

We provide a full continuum of care for Asthma, Arthritis and COPD patients including a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests and treatment procedures.

PREVENTION OF COPD: WHAT SHOULD WE DO NOW ?

5:53-67 Feb.2008 Andrew Bush

RESPIRATORY SYNCYTIAL VIRUS infection is a marker for previous damage, not a cause of subsequent problems. There is a theory that those infections may be the cause of COPD in certain children with polymorphism in pro-inflammatory genes.  Those cases may have had anatomical damage as children that caused an increased likelihood of later COPD, compared to other cases of just polymorphism genes or antenatal factors.
